CBC http://www.cbc.ca/television viewers in British Columbia (and US
fans who get CBC from that Province) can see Doctor Who: The Long
Game this Saturday at 5PM PDT. As previously mentioned in the column
election coverage in that Province pre-empted programming in that
region. No elections this week, so Father's Day will air all through
Canada on 24 May. Part 2 of the Planet Of The Doctor documentary is
now online http://www.cbc.ca/planetofthedoctor .
BBC One http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone and BBC Three
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree have disrupted schedules this week due
to the Eurovision music competition. For Doctor Who (episode 9 - The
Empty Child), this means a 6:30PM start on BBC One Saturday instead
of 7PM. It has only been given a 40 minute time slot. The episode is
41 minutes, 45 seconds long. The episode is likely to begin a little
early or run a little late. Doctor Who Confidential
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/confidential (episode 9 - FX) is
scheduled to start at 7:10PM on BBC Three. The Sunday airing of
Doctor Who on BBC Three is at 7:15PM instead of 7PM with the Sunday
Confidential repeat pre-empted.
In a touch of irony considering the early start time, The Empty
Child is creating controversy with news reports that it has been
toned down. The BBC has a news report about the matter which
clarifies that a sound effect has been altered. The article features
a couple of major spoilers for the episode, so here's the
explanation if you don't want to go there and have the story
spoiled. If you go to the link, you will see the whole article, and
will have no right to say I didn't warn you.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/4557853.stm
"Horrible" Doctor Who toned down
"The next episode of Doctor Who has been toned down after producers
decided one scene was "a bit horrible".
"(Spoiler bit) ... but producers have cut out the sound of his skull
cracking. (Next paragraph also cut regarding same spoiler)
"(Phil Collinson) `The whole sound effect that went with that was a
lot more visceral. We watched it for the first time and said that
was crossing over the line because it was a bit too horrible.'
"But he said the episode, titled The Empty Child, was still the
scariest yet.
"`It was about time we did a scary one," Mr. Collinson said. `Doctor
Who is well-known for being spooky and scary.'
(Another spoiler)
"News of the episode comes days after the BBC announced the DVD of
the new series - the first since 1989 - would not be available to
children under 12 because of a scene where a Dalek (spoiler outside
UK)."
ABC http://www.abc.net.au/tv is premiering the new Doctor Who series this Saturday at 7:30PM with episode 1 - Rose. The third country to see the series.
ABC is also sending out a notice regarding the fact that they are skipping Destiny of the Daleks in their weekday rotation of the earlier episodes.
"Thank you for your email regarding the Daleks in `Doctor Who'.
"The ABC was not able to access every Doctor Who episode from BBC Worldwide. Sadly Destiny of the Daleks is not available for broadcast. Our programming department advises that at the time we acquired the rights to repeat Doctor Who, there were legal issues surrounding the estate of Terry Nation, Doctor Who writer and creator of the Daleks. At this point in time the above legal issues relating to the original Doctor Who series have not been resolved and are unlikely to be resolved in the near future.
"The resolution of this issues that you mention, was in fact to
enable the Daleks to be featured in the new series. Episode 6 will
be broadcast as normal during Doctor Who; Adventures of the Human
Race commencing at 7:30pm this Saturday.
"Thank you for your interest in the ABC and I hope you enjoy the new series of Doctor Who.
"Kind regards
Melanie Borg, ABC Audience and Consumer Affairs"
May 21 may also be the last day for Doctor Who in Utah. KUED 7 http://www.kued.org has put up To Be Announced labels on the Saturday 11:30PM slot for June 11, 18, and 25 (the 11:30PM slot is being bumped for specials on May 28 and June 4). Episode 4 of The Visitation will air on May 21. If it's the final night, there will probably be an on-air announcement. Doctor Who continues on MPT Maryland http://www.mpt.org and IPTV Iowa http://www.iptv.org .
Joey Reynolds (Donovan) is interviewing Noel Clarke (Mickey in the
current Doctor Who series) this Sunday for future broadcasts of "Sci-
Fi Overdrive" and "American Who". Joey is asking fans for questions
for Mr. Clarke. If there's anything you wanted to ask, e-mail Joey
at scifiradioguy@... .
If Doctor Who is sold to any additional countries, the news would
likely appear at the BBC Press Office
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net .
